Week 7- Male Chivalry vs. Independent Strength

Only Males choice:

1) No male should take the mid-term and receive A's, and all females take the mid-term and get what they get

2) Everyone takes the mid-term and get what they get.

This wasn't a surprise to me when us females tried to convince the males to choose choice #2, when the results came to, CHOICE 1. It just made me observe the males reaction when the females made it a threat rather than a compromise.. So when it came around to the second round to try and convince the males one more time... it made me think of rather than making them proving a point to us females, why not make it a point to prove it to yourself that you can take the test on your own. I know the emphasis was equality, but men don't want to hear that because its more of a competition to them. So when you twist it around and make it a goal upon themselves, they want to take it into their own hands.. or for the 2 that voted Choice 2 at least!

Since we've been talking about rights and Femenism... I looked up a bunch of 'First Women...' and couldn't believe how recent these dates are.. Less than 50 years ago did these changes occur.. I wonder WHO and WHEN we will have a Female U.S. President?

Week 6- Humanist!

Hannah Teter is a-- HUMAN-ist!
I hear this from my friends all the time, jokingly of course.. "I was BORN naked, we should BE naked!!" This idea that nudity is frowned upon in some societies make me think back to the days in which Columbus first discovers these, 'bare barbarians.' They weren't "civilized," because they weren't clothed. Bodies ARE beautiful. Obesity is VERY prevalent in American society; a little TOO much, sad to say. Sometimes I think of the image that is forced upon people who arn't necessarily 'in shape' or that fit the mold of 'skinny' but I wouldn't emphasize weather or not you fit into a certain pant size, rather that you are eating healthy and exercising!

Week 5- Machines and the Minds

"To think is to create" vs. "Machines as the measures of men" (WW pg. 555)

Technology worries me when I think about our day in age when people rely on machines than our own minds. It makes me think of my high school math teachers who wouldn't let me use calculators because she wanted me to use my mind rather than let a machine do it for me. Like, what will happen in the future when we rely on our machines to make our clothes, our books, our food, our LIVES, and all of a sudden machines don't work-- we wouldn't know what to do because we never learned how to sew our own clothes, learn how to cook, pick up a pen, paper and lace pages together, or exersize and eat right to live a longer and healthier life. The power of our minds is much more advanced than any piece of technology we can build.. yes it may be faster, but it was our minds that thought of the machine in the first place! I know that if I put my mind to anything, I can create it, or manipulate the thought.

Week 5-Revolutions of Industrializations

"Industrialization is, I am afraid, going to be a curse for mankind.... God forbid that India should ever take to industrialism after the manner of the West. The economic imperialism of a single time island kingdom is today keeping the world in chains. If an entire nation of 300 millions took to similar economic exploitation, it would strip the world bare like locusts.... Industrialization on a mass scale will necessarily lead to passive or active exploitation of the villagers.... The machine produces much too fast." -Mahatma Gandhi

This quote too stuck in my mind as I read Ways of the World Chap 18. "The machine produces much too fast." Just thinking back on the past 200 years, us human beings have advanced tremendously! The more ahead you are in society regarding to technology, or things that make you more advanced than other societies when it comes to doing things easier or in a less amount of time, you are given power to how advanced you are. Power such as Great Britain, which started out as small, but grew and grew until it almost dominated the entire world. What happens when we advance to the point which our advances make it so that we can no longer advance without going backwards??

Week 4-Science, Religion and Enlightenment

"The day will come when the sun will shine only on free men, born knowing no other master but their reason, The perfectibility of humanity is indefinite" Marquis de Condorcet

It's a little funny to me how this quote talks about when the DAY WILL COME.. because this quote reminds me of the DAYS THAT WERE. How the sun shined only on free men, born knowing no other master but their reason. It makes me wonder how things would have gone had Columbus LEARNED from the Indians rather try and CHANGE them. We can only advance so much. We CAN though, inspire and enlighten for times and times to come. If you get a chance you should watch The Book of Eli.
The controversy of how we see Religion as the center of the worlds major wars and How without it, people have no order or hope.
